Handmade paper bows are scatteres across the floorIt’s halfway through November, and the Collective are finally admitting Christmas is on its way. Which, of course, means it’s the season of Christmas fairs.

This year we’ll be taking over the hall at the Telegraph Hill Centre on Saturday the 29th of November, from 12 – 6pm.

Close up of a pair of hands folding a loop to make a paper bow. There’s set to be a lovely mix of people selling their handmade things, a chance to play some retro computer games, and you can take part in some crafty workshops – print your own wrapping paper design, make cards, or tree decorations.

Everyone is welcome – we’d love to have everyone along, making a creative Christmas with us.

So, if you like the sound of this, head up to the top of Telegraph Hill in New Cross and get crafting!

Hallowe’en Making Day, Saturday 18th October

A basic card and foam print block reads backwards: Halloween Making Day 18-10-14, with a simple pumpkin and bird mask both outlined. The Craft Collective have been planning our next Making Day, up at the Hill Centre. We’re going to be getting together to help each other, and anyone else who comes along, make fancy dress items for Hallowe’en!

We’ve been gathering various crafty items, including a wealth of egg boxes, and will be making them into scary masks, fancy crowns, and anything else that takes our fancy. If you want to join in, come along. Everyone’s welcome, whatever your level of experience or skill.

As ever, there’ll be tea, cake, and maybe a savoury nibble or two.

Come along to the Telegraph Hill Centre, at the top of Pepys Road (right beside St Catherine’s Church), between 11 – 4 on Saturday 18th of October.

Looking forward into the Year of the Horse

The Craft Collective have got together to work out what we’d like to do in the coming year, and it feels like we’ll be continuing to have open making days, where anyone is welcome to drop by and get stuck in with different crafts.

Next Saturday, the 8th of February is our first date in 2014. Come to the Telegraph Hill centre and celebrate the Year of the Horse with us.

Hope to see you there!

The Craft Collective heads into Autumn

With the Autumnal nip in the air growing, my desire to curl up with a quilt and a book is growing. Just as well there are so many CRAFTmate patches now – this quilt will be big enough for the whole collective and then some!

Clusters of patches are being pieced together, but there’s still a lot to add – and plenty of kits to make more patches, in case you want to add one.

If you want to come and quilt in company, head to the Telegraph Hill Centre on Saturday the 21st of September (tomorrow, at time of writing), and ask for a CRAFTmate kit. There’s no charge, just a request that you add the patch to our gorgeous quilt.

Other crafts going on tomorrow are felting, knitting squares for dog blankets (all blankets go to Battersea Dogs’ Home), and lino print making.

CRAFTmate – How does doing something creative make you feel?

CRAFTmate is here! Saturday 15 June, 11am – 4pm, Telegraph Hill Centre

Bringing people together to share the buzz that is so often built up when sitting and creating things with others….

How does doing something creative make you feel?

Hexagon shaped fabric patch with "lost in my own little world" stitched in black thread, spiralling into the centre.

We’re very excited about this project which we hope will grow and grow and help bring people together to share their thoughts and feelings about doing something creative. The idea is that we get our feelings down on hexagaon patches – stitched, printed, painted, or whatever you like! – then join them up with other CRAFTmates to create a huge patchwork conversation. Then we’ll tell the world how being creative makes us feel by exhibiting the growing patchwork in lots of venues across South London, starting mid-July, and sharing images of our messages on our Facebook page.

Take part

  • Make a patch: Use the instructions and tempate available here, or pick up a CRAFTmate kit from any of the many lovely local cafes, libraries or shops in the local area, or turn up to the CRAFTmate launch.
  • Join your patch: Bring your patch(es) to the CRAFTmate launch – details below. If you can’t come along on the day, email us for the postal address to send them to.
  • Join in the conversation: at the CRAFTmate launch, on our Facebook page, or on Twitter @CraftOnTheHill with #CRAFTmate.

Come to the launch on Saturday 15 June 2013, from 11am – 4pm, at the Telegraph Hill Centre. Bring your finished patch, or sit with us and stitch along – materials will be available, and all abilities are welcome.

Craft against Poverty – the Craftivist Collective’s I’m a Piece project.

The Craftivist Collective have been encouraging people to join in a project called I’m A Piece, using craft skills – sewing and embroidery – to raise awareness of a campaign to put tackling children’s hunger worldwide at the top of the G8’s agenda.

To take part, people make fabric jigsaw pieces to a set size and shape, and stitch a relevant phrase onto the piece. The piece is then sent to an MP with information about the Race Against Hunger.

There’s still time to join in – check out the Craftivist’s I’m A Piece website which has the pattern, sample letters to send with the piece, information about the campaign, lobbying information – all you need to be part of a beautiful and creative campaign. My own piece is ready for an apt phrase to be stitched on – I just have to decide what to say, and what stitch to say it in!
